I used to draw faces on them and make little puppets of them: Acorns (or oaknuts) are the nuts of oak trees, which grow abundantly across the globe. You can find loads of them in Autumn. 
They are a rich food source for wildlife including wild boars, jays, mice, badgers and squirrels. The majority tend to be munched before they can germinate. Each acorn has the potential to grow an oak tree.

Once a staple food for various societies, acorns are not as frequently consumed today.

While raw acorns harbor high amounts of potentially harmful plant compounds called tannins, properly cooked acorns are low in tannins and generally safe to eat. They’re highly nutritious and contain lots of antioxidants!
